Unlike other businesses, banks fund themselves almost entirely through borrowing instead of equity. This leaves them very vulnerable, but banks maintain that increasing equity requirement would impair their ability to lend and compete. But what if banks used much of that equity to pay high return rates demanded by stockholders? Why do stock holders demand high returns? Because they are a risk from all the debt they carry.
