White House Blogger: CBO Says PPACA Will Help

White House officials are trying to put Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analyses of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in a different light.

Republicans contend that the Obama administration fiscal year 2013 budget proposal and CBO analyses of PPACA show that PPACA will be much more expensive than backers had suggested and make the federal budget deficit worse.

Jeanne Lambrew, the deputy assistant to President Obama for health policy, says in a White House blog entry that PPACA opponents are using “new math” to make false claims about PPACA’s projected budget impact.

The opponents are pointing to CBO projections and contending that the total cost of PPACA will be $1.7 trillion from 2012 through 2021, or twice as high as originally projected, Lambrew says.

PPACA opponents are not adjusting for the effects of population growth, inflation, or PPACA provisions that should save money over time, Lambrew says.

CBO analysts have taken those factors into account when suggesting that PPACA should be fully paid for, Lambrew says.

PPACA opponents are also distorting the CBO figures by comparing a 10-year cost estimate to an 8-year cost estimate, Lambrew says.

“This is simply bad math,” Lambrew says.

Lambrew reports that the CBO itself has concluded that its PPACA impact estimates are similar to what they were a few years ago and have not changed to any significant degree.
