Big banks used to be the main acquirers of advisory firms, but in the past few years, the consolidators (such as Focus Financial Partners and Fiduciary Network) and bigger advisors have recognized the opportunity as well.

These acquirers–some serial, others more one-time actors–are spurred to act as more advisors reach retirement age and become more open to selling. Acquirers are also catching on to the healthy fundamentals and long term growth potential of the independent investment advisor business model (despite some recent downward pressures from the volatile market environment).
