A large Northwestern insurer has celebrated its 100th anniversary by doing good works.

Standard Insurance Company, a unit of StanCorp Financial Group Inc., Portland, Ore., pledged a year ago that it would recognize its centennial by donating at least 10,000 hours of employee volunteer service to nonprofit groups.

The company ended up contributing more than 10,500 hours of employee volunteer service by scheduling monthly “days of caring,” Standard says.

Standard is continuing the employee volunteer service program and already has 8 days of caring scheduled for 2007.
