IRS Reminds Extension Filers About Freefile for Approaching October 15 Deadline

The IRS released a reminder last week for taxpayers taking advantage of the extended October 15, 2026 filing deadline for their 2025 returns: the IRS Free File service remains available through October 15. Taxpayers are automatically entitled to take advantage of the six-month filing extension (although the extension does not apply to amounts owed). IRS Free File is a guided tax preparation service that is available to taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less (in 2025). Free File offers fillable forms for taxpayers who qualify and are able to complete their own tax returns. The program provides step-by-step guidance and offers error checks throughout the process. The IRS recommends filing sooner rather than later to avoid the rush in the fall. For more information on the federal tax filing obligations, visit Tax Facts Online. Read More: Link to Q647.
