The IRS has recently released guidance providing important details on the mechanics of the new saver's match program, which will officially go live in 2027--just a few short months away. Starting in 2027, the saver's credit will be replaced with a matching contribution that will be deposited directly into the qualifying saver's retirement account. Pursuant to the guidance, qualifying individuals will attach a new Form 8880-A to their tax return, providing details about their income, filing status, retirement account contributions and retirement account distributions. Technically, taxpayers will file this form with their 2027 tax return, during the first few months of 2028--meaning that qualifying individuals will receive their matching contributions sometime in 2028. This generally means that to claim the credit, taxpayers must file a tax return even if they are not otherwise required to file and have no tax liability.
