The IRS' Direct File website now states that the program has been closed. The acting IRS commissioner issued a limited announcement stating that better alternatives exist. While Direct File was initially only available to taxpayers in 12 states, for 2024 tax filings, the pilot program was expanded to give taxpayers in 25 states access to the option. Prior to its closure, taxpayers could access for free via their mobile phone, computer or tablet. Direct File used questions as prompts to help taxpayers prepare their tax returns. Roughly 300,000 returns were filed using Direct File for 2024. The IRS also reminds taxpayers that IRS Free File is also available via IRS.gov to taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less. Free File also offers fillable forms for taxpayers to use to prepare their returns regardless of their income levels. For more information on the 2025 tax filing obligations, visit Tax Facts Online.
