IRS Makes Direct File Program Permanent

Last week, the IRS announced that it would be making its direct file program a permanent option for filing federal income tax returns starting with the 2025 tax season. During the 2024 tax season, the IRS made its direct file pilot program available to taxpayers in 12 states. Now, the IRS is evaluating options for expanding the program to make it available to taxpayers across the U.S. starting in 2025. The IRS also plans to expand the program to cover additional tax situations. In the 2024 year, 140,803 taxpayers used the direct file option to file their taxes. Starting in 2025, states will be able to choose to work with the IRS to participate in the program. The direct file program is a new program that is separate from the preexisting free file program.
