The IRS has recently issued a reminder for taxpayers who requested a tax filing extension for the 2022 tax year. To avoid late filing penalties, taxpayers must file Forms 1040 by October 16, 2023. Taxpayers may also have extended deadlines in various states if they qualify for relief due to natural disasters. For example, taxpayers in the counties of Maui, Hawaii, and many counties in Florida, South Carolina and Georgia have until February 24, 2024, to file various individual and business tax returns due to wildfires and hurricane Idalia. Members of the military and taxpayers who are serving in combat zones have 180 days after they leave that combat zone to file their tax returns. The IRS free file system is available through the October 16 filing deadline. For more information on the tax filing requirements, visit Tax Facts Online. : Q 8501.
