One of the developing trends over the past few years has been theme-based investments. The idea is to focus on emerging ideas that may reshape not just the capital markets, but the world.

Along these lines, Barclays Global Investors has introduced four new iShares exchange-traded funds on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Three of the funds will follow specific equity themes: Clean energy, nuclear power and timber/forestry. The funds will follow Standard & Poor's-designed indexes and charge annual expense ratios of 0.48 percent.

The fourth fund is the iShares FTSE China (HK Listed) Index Fund (FCHI), which provides broad exposure to the Chinese stock market. The index currently holds approximately 90 large- and mid-cap companies (H shares or Red Chip).

The better known iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 (FXI) also consists of the Class H and Red Chip shares, but just the largest 25 largest companies.o iShares S&P Global Clean Energy Index Fund (ICLN)o iShares S&P Global Nuclear Energy Index Fund (NUCL)o iShares S&P Global Timber & Forestry Index Fund (WOOD)o iShares FTSE China (HK Listed) Index Fund (FCHI)
