Highmark CEO to Chair AHIP Board
David Holmberg runs a big health insurer that has its own medical malls.
The America’s Health Insurance Plans board has picked a Blue Cross and Blue Shield carrier executive to be its new chair.
David Holmberg, the chairman and CEO of Highmark Health, will take over from the current AHIP chair, Bruce Broussard of Humana, Jan. 1, 2022.
AHIP represents many of the United States’ health insurers, and its leaders help shape federal and state health finance policy.
Holmberg said in comments about the AHIP post, included in the election announcement, that he believes in reaching out.
“Americans are clear,” Holmberg said. “They are looking for collaboration across health care for better experiences, better outcomes, and lower costs.”
AHIP wants to contribute to efforts to increase the value of care, improve equity, and result in better overall health, he said.

Holmberg has been Highmark’s CEO since 2014. Highmark is a nonprofit organized based in Pittsburgh. It has about $18 billion in annual revenue, and it provides or administers health coverage for 6 million people.
The company also has a large health care provider network, and its own medical malls, giving Holmberg experience as the head of a health care provider organization as well as a health care payer.
Holmberg also has experience with running a specialty care provider: Earlier in his career, he ran an eye care center company in the San Antonio area.
Holmberg was the 2019-2020 chairman of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association board.
