The prospect of spending their retirement years abroad appeals to many Americans, but some may be deterred by thinking that it's beyond their means. International Living's 2023 Annual Global Retirement Index indicates that a number of highly desirable countries can fit into the plans of budget-minded retirees. The website's index is based on information provided by a network of on-the-ground editors, correspondents and contributors in 16 countries. Its researchers use this information to rate the countries across several categories, including cost of living. They score each category on a scale of 1 to 100, then come up with a composite number that determines the final ranking. See the gallery for the 10 cheapest countries to retire abroad, according to International Living.
