ThinkAdvisor sifted through this year's Forbes list of the 400 wealthiest Americans — a group worth $4 trillion collectively — to identify the 16 women at the top of the ranking. Forbes introduced its 2022 list by noting that the country's 400 richest people are $500 billion poorer than they were last year. In fact, the minimum net worth to get onto The Forbes 400 fell for the first time since the Great Depression, down $200 million to $2.7 billion amid the market selloff. Forbes reporters interviewed list members in person or spoke with them virtually or by phone when possible. Some billionaires were more forthcoming than others in providing documentation for their assets and companies. Reporters also interviewed numerous people in their orbits, from employees to financial and legal advisors to rivals and peers, and pored over thousands of Securities and Exchange Commission documents, court filings, probate records and news articles. Forbes then threw in stock prices as of Sept. 2 to calculate each one's fortune. See the gallery for the 16 richest women in America.
