Mutual Life Insurers Begin to Set 2022 Dividends

The dividend payouts affect the value of the policies for the insured, and they also are an indicator of what life insurers think about market conditions.

Northwestern Mutual

Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company says the interest rate it uses to calculate 2022 dividend payments will hold steady at 5%. Total dividend payments are on track to increase to $6.5 billion, up from $6.2 billion in dividends for 2021, and up from $6 billion in 2020.

Northwestern Mutual is a Milwaukee-based company that was founded in 1857. It reported $31 billion in 2020 annual revenue.

New York Life

New York Life Insurance Company says it expects to pay a total of $1.9 billion in dividends in 2022, up from $1.8 billion in 2021.

The interest rate used to calculate the payout for 2022 was not immediately available. The 2021 rate was 5.8%.

New York Life is a New York-based company that was founded in 1845. It reported $32 billion in 2020 annual revenue.

MassMutual

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company says the interest rate it uses to calculate 2022 dividend payments will hold steady at 6%. The company says it expects to pay a total of $1.85 billion in dividends in 2022, up from $1.7 billion in 2021 and 2020.

MassMutual is a Springfield, Massachusetts-based company that was founded in 1851. It reported $23 billion in 2020 annual revenue.

Penn Mutual

The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company says the interest rate it uses to calculate 2022 dividend payments will hold steady at 5.75%. The company expects to pay $123 million in dividends to eligible policyholders, up from $105 million in 2021, and up from $100 million in 2020.

Penn Mutual is a Horsham, Pennsylvania-based company that was founded in 1847. It reported $1.6 billion in 2020 annual revenue.
