Scott Rider Returns as Face of Disability Insurance Awareness Month

The former MassMutual advisor just happened to have income protection. Then he needed it.

Life Happens is bringing Scott Rider back as the spokesperson for the Disability Insurance Awareness Month campaign.

The 2021 outreach effort starts Saturday.

Rider grew up in Ohio and was part of the track and field team at Ohio State University. He went to work as a financial advisor for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, then started Rider+Reinke Financial Group LLC in 1988.

In 2006 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Rider says he has been able maintain a decent quality of life because he bought disability insurance when he was starting out in his career.

Because of access to disability benefits, “he and his family have been able to maintain their lifestyle,”  according to Life Happens.

Life Happens is encouraging agents to promote disability insurance awareness by using social media posts it has developed and other tools. One effort, for example, is a quiz that asks a player, “What’s your most valuable asset?” The answer options include a car, a home, jewelry and a paycheck.

Another Life Happens effort features the statement that, “You’re ability to generate income is your largest asset. If you can’t work, where does that leave everything else?”

The list of organizations that has already been promoting the awareness month on Twitter includes Crump Life Insurance Services, Producers XL and Simplicity Des Moines-Davis Life Annuity.

One possible reason for increased interest this year: The COVID-19 pandemic has left some survivors with chronic pain, brain fog and other potentially disabling conditions.

At this point, COVID-19 has sparked more interest in life insurance, but some consumers might be ready to hear more about income protection, too.
