IRS Again Extends Deadline for $500-Per-Child Stimulus Payment

The previous deadline was Sept. 30.

The IRS has once again extended the deadline for parents to claim the $500-per-child stimulus payments they are entitled to under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed in March.

“Federal beneficiaries who didn’t register to receive $500 per child payments earlier this year now have additional time,” the IRS said in a statement Monday. Parents have until 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Nov. 21 to claim the payment using the agency’s tool for people who don’t file income taxes.

This is the second time in two months that the tax agency has extended the deadline for the $500-per-child payments available to American households with children under 17 years old and incomes less than $99,000 (or $198,000 for joint filers), though the benefit begins to fade out for incomes over $75,000 and $150,000, respectively. The previous deadline, announced in August, was Sept. 30.

The latest extension for the per-child payments coincides with an extended deadline for taxpayers to register for the $1,200-per-adult Economic Impact Payment (EIP) announced in early October. Both payments were supposed to be sent automatically to taxpayers who had filed a federal tax return in 2018 or 2019, but the $500-per-child payments were excluded from EIP payments distributed between April 10 and May 17, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Non-filers were advised to use the Non-Filers tool to receive their payments.

The IRS says anyone using the Non-Filers tool can speed the arrival of their payment by choosing to receive it by direct deposit. Otherwise they will get a check. They can track the  status of their payment using the Get my Payment tool, available on IRS.gov.
