New York authorities let a giant Aflac Duck balloon and other balloon characters march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Thursday, in spite of fierce winds.

The city says it may ground the parade character balloons, for safety reasons, when wind gust speeds exceed 34 miles per hour.

Some gusts in New York today reached 37 miles per hour, according to National Weather Service.

City officials compromised and let the character balloons march in the parade today, but required the balloons to fly at a lower level than usual.

Millions of people watch the New York Thanksgiving parade in person, and millions more watch it on TV.

Twitter users were tweeting during the parade about a controversy concerning the spokesduck: the possibility that it might actually be a goose.

A Twitter user named Warrior Mom, for example, tweeted a tweet about the Duck with the hashtags #ThatIsNotADuck and #AflacGoose.

Another Twitter users, kingooooo, Casual Friday Villain, tweeted, “They’re telling me this is the Aflac duck but I think we all know it’s a horrible goose that stole a hat and a scarf.”
