3 New Presidents: Guardian, Aflac, UnitedHealth

None of the new presidents is a CEO.

Three major life and health insurers have named presidents this week, and all of the new presidents will report to a chief executive officer.

Andrew McMahon will be president of Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. He’ll report to Guardian CEO Deanna Mulligan.

Frederick Crawford will be president of Aflac Inc. Crawford will report to Aflac CEO Daniel Amos.

Sir Andrew Witty will be president of UnitedHealth Group Inc.  Witty will report to UnitedHealth CEO David Wichmann.

Andrew McMahon

McMahon, who will become president of Guardian Jan. 1, has been executive vice president of individual markets, enterprise strategy and customer development.

He also oversaw the company’s Guardian Direct sales program. He began working for Guardian in 2017.

He has a bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University and a master’s degree in business from Columbia.

Michael Ferik, who has been Guardian’s chief financial officer, will succeed McMahon as head of the individual markets business.

Fredrick Crawford

Crawford will become president of Aflac Jan. 1. He is now an executive vice president at Aflac and the company’s chief financial officer.

Max Brodén, who is now a senior vice president at Aflac and deputy chief financial officer, will become Aflac’s CFO.

Crawford began working for Aflac in 2015.

He has a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and a master’s degree in business from the University of Iowa.

Sir Andrew Witty

Witty, UnitedHealth’s new president, has been the CEO of UnitedHealth’s Optum unit. He will continue to be the Optum CEO.

Witty came to UnitedHealth in 2018. He previously was the CEO of GlaxoSmithKline, a pharmaceutical manufacturer, in 2018.

Witty has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Nottingham, and he is the university’s former chancellor.

In 2012, he was knighted.
