Members of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) are heading to San Diego to start their 89th annual convention Saturday.

The Washington-based group represents about 100,000 agents and brokers at the U.S. Capitol, at federal regulatory agencies, and in state capitals.

One sign of how much the Affordable Care Act (ACA), moves by the administration of President Donald Trump, and other forces have changed NAHU members’ lives is this: no traditional major medical issuer other than Health Net, an arm of Centene Corp., is on the NAHU convention sponsor list.

The convention’s sole top-level sponsor is Aliera Healthcare, an Atlanta-based organization that markets health care cost sharing ministry programs and supplemental health insurance benefits.

Aliera was also a gold-level for the Inter-Company Marketing Group 2019 annual conference, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Most of the other top-level sponsors are benefits distribution organizations, health savings account (HSA) providers or health account program administrators, or compliance services providers.

Fidelity Investments, for example, is a silver-level sponsor, and Nippon Life, which has ties to Principal Financial Group Inc., is a crystal-level sponsor.

Aflac, Health Net and Tokio Marine HCC are on the list of bronze-level sponsors.

NAHU will be offering four “Learning Lab” breakout session tracks tomorrow.

Two of the four tracks will focus on the Medicare plan market. None will focus on the individual major medical market. The main non-Medicare compliance breakout session on Saturday will focus on the legality of cannabis.
