The head of An Affordable Care Act public exchange that’s tried to build a great relationship with agents and brokers says business looked great on the first day of the open enrollment period for 2019.

Kevin  Patterson, the chief executive officer of Connect for Health Colorado, reported Friday, in a public comment, that call center call volume was “well ahead of our projections, and above levels that we have seen in the past.”

The individual major medical open enrollment period in Colorado began Thursday and is set to run until Jan. 15.

In most of the rest of the country, the open enrollment period started Thursday and is set to run until Dec. 15.

Connect for Health Colorado — a state-based ACA public exchange — reported earlier this year that agents and brokers helped bring in about 55% of the 2018 coverage applicants.

An ACA public public exchange aims to serve as a web-based supermarket for health coverage from private insurers.

Patterson reported that, in Colorado, a combination of moderate price increases and the ACA premium tax credit subsidy should make subsidized individual health coverage a good deal for low-income and moderate-income consumers in Colorado this year.

For the average customer who qualifies for the premium tax credit subsidy and renews coverage, out-of-pocket premium costs could drop 24%, Patterson said.

About half of the customers who qualify for the premium tax credit subsidy will be able to get bronze-level coverage for a $0 net premium, Patterson said.
