The head of a big nonprofit health insurer that has been a vigorous supporter of the Affordable Care Act will succeed the outgoing head of Anthem Inc. as the next leader of America’s Health Insurance Plans.
AHIP, a Washington-based group for health insurers, says Bernard Tyson, the chief executive officer of Kaiser Permanente, will be the chairman of its board in 2018.
Joseph Swedish, the chairman and president of Anthem, has been AHIP’s chairman this year.
Anthem recently announced that Swedish will be stepping down from his post as Anthem’s president and CEO on Nov. 20, and from his post as chairman in May.
AHIP also announced the names of nine new AHIP members.
None of the new members comes from a commercial health insurer that focuses mainly on the traditional major medical market.
