Financial advisors can now earn continuing education credits approved by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards regarding Medicare.

The Medicare Rights Center became a new CFP Board CE sponsor as of Jan. 1.

CFP Board’s Job Task Analysis, conducted every five years, is a research-based program that gauges the body of knowledge for financial planning. Results are used to verify and update the content of CFP Board’s examination and education requirements.

The results of the 2015 Job Task Analysis include updated lists of Principal Knowledge Topics, which are the basis of CFP Board’s CFP Exam blueprint, and are the subject topics CFP Board accepts for continuing education credit.

Among the Knowledge Topic Categories is “Retirement Savings and Income Planning,” which includes the sub-topic of “Social Security and Medicare.”

Medicare Interactive Pro (MI Pro) now offers two online Medicare courses approved by the CFP Board that was launched in April by the Medicare Rights Center, a nonprofit consumer service organization.

“Financial advisors routinely call our national helpline, attend our webinars, and use our educational materials to better assist their clients with preparing for their health care needs and costs,” said Medicare Rights Center President Joe Baker, in a statement. “With MI Pro, Certified Financial Planners can now learn Medicare at their own pace while earning continuing education hours from the CFP Board at the same time.”

MI Pro offers two programs approved by the CFP Boardfor CE hours– the Intensive and an Overview:

  • Medicare Intensive for Financial Planners - 17 CE Hours; $272 for six months. This 17-module program provides in-depth knowledge of the rules and regulations regarding Medicare – everything from Medicare coverage options, coordination of benefits, and Late Enrollment Penalties to Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (IRMAA), the appeals process, and available assistance programs.
  • Medicare Overview for Financial Planners - 5 CE Hours; $128 for four months This eight-module overview covers the essentials, from coverage options and enrollment periods to the coordination of benefits between Medicare and other forms of insurance.
