The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has picked the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) to help provide training for public exchange agents and brokers.

The NAHU Online Learning Institute system will provide training for producers in states that use the HealthCare.gov enrollment system.

States that run their own Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) public exchanges set up their own producer training arrangements. In the past, NAHU has helped set up training programs for producers who work with DC Health Link, the locally run exchange in the District of Columbia.

CMS, an arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is getting ready to register producers for the 2016 open enrollment period, which is set to start Nov. 1, 2015 and run until Jan. 31, 2016.

CMS took applications for exchange producer training program vendors in April. NAHU says that it believes it will be one of three CMS-approved producer training vendors for the 2016 open enrollment period. The names of the other two vendors were not immediately available.

Would-be exchange producers will register to work with HealthCare.gov through the CMS agent/broker portal, then choose an exchange training vendor, NAHU says.

In some states, NAHU says, producers who go through the NAHU training program may qualify for continuing education credits.
