House wants weekly exchange reports

The House wants weekly enrollment numbers for the public exchange.

Members of the House voted 259-154 Thursday for H.R. 3362, a public health insurance exchange activity reporting bill.

The bill would require the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to work with other federal and state agencies to produce weekly reports on public exchange enrollment, along with related website activity, and technical problems.

The lead sponsors of the bill, Reps. Lee Terry, R-Omaha, Neb., and Bill Cassidy, R-La., introduced the bill Oct. 29, shortly after open enrollment began.

HHS officials said the department put off reporting enrollment data because they were having a hard time getting clean data.

The sponsors and other critics accused HHS of putting it because of low enrollment numbers.

Since then, HHS has posted three monthly enrollment activity reports. HHS has not yet started posting data on paid exchange plan enrollment.

All Republicans who voted backed the bill.

Supporters managed to attract the votes of 33 Democrats, including votes from some Democrats, such as Rep. Albio Sires, D-N.J., who rarely cross party lines when voting.
