A company that distributes short-term medical insurance products says business has been great since the new public health insurance exchanges opened their doors.

The company, Health Insurance Innovations Inc. (Nasdaq:HIIQ), markets short-term medical products, hospital indemnity insurance and other health-related products for insurers. About half of the plans it has in force are short-term medical plans, with terms of six months or 12 months.

The total number of applications submitted during the fourth quarter was about 50 percent higher than the number submitted during the fourth quarter of 2012, the company said in a comment on the company’s performance.

For the full year, revenue from premiums and premium equivalents was up about 30 percent, the company said.
