U.S. workers short on cash

Even many full-time U.S. workers are short on emergency reserves.

Analysts at Cigna Corp. (NYSE:CI) have reported that finding in a summary of results from a recent online survey of 1,501 U.S. workers ages 25 to 65. All participants were working full-time and have group benefits.

About 59 percent of the participants said they have only enough cash and other resources to get by for three months without a paycheck.

About 29 percent said they would have trouble getting by for more than one month without a paycheck, and 58 percent said they would have financial problems if an illness or injury kept them from working for a month.

Cigna commissioned the survey to promote its voluntary benefits products and benefits education services.

Aflac Inc. (NYSE:AFL) looked at employee needs when it conducted another survey earlier this year, and it found that 45 percent of the workers who participated in its survey had less than $1,000 in savings they could use to handle expenses related to an illness or injury.
