For hospital patients, observation status can prove costly

A seemingly arbitrary thing like what a hospital decides to label you when being held for observation could have wide-ranging impacts on your finances and your family if you are an individual on Medicare. When follow-up treatment is required, it is only covered if the hospital designates the individual as being in inpatient for at least three days. Various lawsuits and a bill, however, are looking to change that.
