An unrelated illness has caused the first double leg-transplant patient to have his transplanted legs amputated above the knee. What was hailed as a “miracle surgery” and pivot in an ambitious new direction for amputees is no less so now, as the sole reason for the amputation was due to an illness that caused the man to stop taking anti-rejection drugs.
