Employees who smoke cost their employers more money. Interestingly enough, it is not the added health care costs that really put on the squeeze but rather lost productivity due to frequent smoke breaks. Some would contend that employees that smoke could be cheaper hires because of their diminished life expectancies but unless the company offers a defined benefit program — which few do anymore — this has no impact.
