The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) requires that health insurance plans need to provide new mothers with the equipment and services they need in order to encourage breast-feeding, which has been shown to protect a newborn’s health. To that end, breast pumps are a common piece of equipment needed, but the ACA doesn’t say exactly what kind of what brand of breast pump should be covered. Cheap pumps are clearly better for insurers’ short-term costs, but they also don’t work as well, especially for working mothers on the go.
