The main provisions of PPACA will come into force in just under a year from now, and the big question is whether or not the law will prompt employers – who currently provide health benefits for some 150 million Americans—to stop providing health benefits. The average cost to a large firm for covering an employee with a family is almost $16,000 a year. But with the cost of healthcare itself constantly rising, something has got to give. Many employers expect their employees to pay a bigger share of costs going forward, while others look to the rise of defined contribution plans wherein employees are given a fixed sum to spend on health insurance sold on a private exchange.
