Paying the Caregiver

CareFamily.com Inc. has an idea for people getting home health care and their families: Obeying the laws that govern payroll taxes and other payroll matters is a good idea.

The Virginia Beach, Va., caregiver finder service says it will be adding caregiver payroll services to the package of services it provides.

Today, the firm says, families tend to divide into two camps: Those that hire aides through home health agencies, and those that pay workers “under the table.”

Similar issues have come up in connection with reviews of some potential Supreme Court justices, when vetters have discovered that candidates employed nannies without bothering to pay payroll taxes.

Families that hire their own caregivers are responsible for issuing W-2 forms, withholding the Medicare and Social Security payroll taxes, and paying the employer taxes, CareFamily says.
