Mitt Romney could see increased support from conservatives thanks to his running mate Paul Ryan’s tough approach to overhauling the federal budget. Romney could also lose a lot of support from seniors who don’t like Ryan’s proposal to transform Medicare into a voucher-like program. The proposal would control Medicare’s growth with a cap on payments and let seniors buy health coverage on the private market. This would only affect people under age 55, not current seniors. Florida has traditionally been a stronghold for liberals, but an influx of retirees from conservative states is shifting the political outlook. In Florida, seniors age 65 and up are a force as they make up 18% of the state’s population and more than 25% of the state’s registered voters.
