Democrats slam Ryan as threat to social safety net

Now that Mitt Romney has chosen Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate, Democrats say a Republican vote will be a vote for deep cuts to the social safety net.

Obama campaign aides criticized Ryan’s proposed budget, which would substantially alter programs like Medicare and Social Security. Democrats said Ryan’s plan would saddle seniors with greater financial burdens while leaving wealthy Americans unscathed.

“It’s a pick that’s meant to thrill the most strident voices in the Republican Party, but it’s one that should trouble everyone else: the middle class, seniors, students,” said David Axelrod, President Obama’s political strategist, on ABC’s “This Week.”
