Home Care Group: Super Committee Failure Was Good for Us

The National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) is welcome the failure of the congressional Super Committee to come up with $1.2 trillion in budget cut proposals.

The NAHC, Washington, represents 33,000 home care and hospice organizations that provide services for a total of about 12 million U.S. patients, including 3 million Medicare plan enrollees who receive home health care services.

The failure of the Super Committee — the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction – has become a symbol of congressional gridlock and could possibly lead to an automatic federal budget reduction process called sequestration.

But the drafters of the sequestration process protected Medicare and Medicaid benefits from automatic sequestration cuts, and some proposals called for imposing up to $40 billion in beneficiary co-payment increases and provider payment cuts on Medicare, NAHC President Val Halamandaris says in a statement.

Sequestration would lead to just $5.6 billion in Medicare provider cuts over 10 years, Halamandaris says.
