PlanPrescriber has come out with Medicare prescription drug plan review advice that insurance professionals may want to share with their own Medicare-eligible clients.

PlanPrescriber is promoting its Medicare plan selection system during the 2012 Medicare annual enrollment season by publishing a batch of Medicare drug coverage shopping tips.

The annual enrollment season started Saturday and is set to last until Dec. 7.

PlanPrescriber, Maynard, Mass. – a unit of eHealth Inc.,  Mountain View, Calif. (NASDAQ: EHTH) – has put out a press release reminding consumers who are eligible for Medicare that most who want to make changes in their Medicare Advantage or Medicare drug plan choices for 2012 must do so before Dec. 7.

One of the company’s top tips for consumers is, “Know ALL your costs — premiums are just one slice of the pie.”

PlanPrescriber urges consumers to pay attention to deductibles, copayments, coinsurance rates and the annual out-of-pocket limit as well as the monthly cost of coverage.

“If you don’t know what your deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and total out-of-pocket limit are, you don’t know enough about your plan,” PlanPrescriber says.

PlanPrescriber recommends that consumers analyze the drugs they’re taking with the kind of automated tool it offers, and also to have their personal physicians review the drugs they are taking.

A year ago, the company says, it found that a typical enrollee could save about $500 per year by choosing a drug plan that was a better fit.

When physicians review drug lists, they can look for potential conflicts with supplements, over-the-counter drugs and medications prescribed by other doctors, the company says.
