Eastbridge: Not Takens Plague Some Worksite Carriers

Some insurers find that more than 10% of the workers who sign up for their products never actually buy the products.

Analysts at Eastbridge Consulting Group Inc., Avon, Conn., a voluntary and worksite insurance market research firm, discuss the not taken issue in a report based on a survey of voluntary carriers.

“Not takens” refers to workers who sign up for coverage but never pay for coverage.

About 75% of the carriers that talked to the Eastbridge analysts about the issue said they track not takens.

Most base measurements of the problem on the percentage of applications that are submitted but for which no premium is ever received, Eastbridge says.

Not takens account for less than 5% of business at about one-quarter of the participating carriers and more than 10% of business at another quarter of the carriers, Eastbridge says.
