The superintendent of the Maine Bureau of Insurance was sworn in today for a new 5-year term that expires April 1, 2015.

This month, Maine Governor John E. Baldacci reappointed Mila Kofman as superintendent of insurance, a position to which she was first nominated and confirmed in early 2008. A confirmation hearing was held March 22 before the Maine Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Insurance and Financial Services.

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills testified in support of the nomination, along with representatives of the insurance industry, physicians, Maine small businesses and consumer advocacy groups. The Committee’s for vote reappointment and the Senate confirmation vote were unanimous.

Prior to her appointment as superintendent, Ms. Kofman was an associate research professor and project director at the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute. She studied state private health insurance market reforms, regulation, products, and financing strategies.
