HSA Balances Show Upturn

Average individual and family health savings account balances increased in the first quarter for the first time since the second quarter of 2008, a survey finds.

The average balance of individual HSAs in the first quarter was $960, up 3% over the fourth quarter of 2008, while the average family HSA balance was $1,720, up 7%, according to the survey by Canopy Financial Inc., San Francisco.

For health investment accounts, individual accounts averaged $8,001, down 2% from the previous quarter, while family HIAs averaged $10,681, up 5%, Canopy reports.
