Penetration of group health insurance seems to be about the same this year as it was in 2008.

Researchers at the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics have published benefits access, participation rate and take-up rate data in a preview of results from the latest private industry employee benefits survey.

The percentage of private industry employees with access to employer-sponsored health insurance has plateaued at 71%,

The “take-up rate,” or percentage of private industry employees who actually chose to take up the coverage offered, fell to 74%, from 75%.

The BLS expects to release much more survey data, including about access to benefits such as dental insurance, long term care insurance and health savings accounts, later this summer.

A copy of the latest BLS benefits survey report is available here.
