Assurant Employee Benefits is trying to use a new approach to encouraging employees to get involved in the community.

Assurant Employee Benefits, Kansas City, Mo., a unit of Assurant Inc., New York, gave groups of 3 to 5 employees a chance to apply for $100 budget allocations that they could use to try to “change the world.”

Many groups submitted applications, and the 6 winning teams will use the allocations for projects such as buying a used freezer for a food pantry and helping animal rights organizations buy items for fundraising auctions, according to Assurant.

The teams must spend the allocations by September, and they cannot exceed their budgets, use their own money or seek additional funds from co-workers, Assurant says.
