Halifax Hospital Medical Center has sold its Florida Health Care Plan Inc. unit to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Inc.

Halifax Hospital, Daytona Beach, Fla., founded Florida Health Care in 1994.

The HMO sells Medicare Advantage coverage as well as large and small group commercial coverage, and it now provides coverage for about 53,000 people.

The “mixed staff model” HMO employs 60 doctors directly and also has 240 outside doctors in its provider network.

Florida Blue, Jacksonville, Fla., is not saying how much it is paying for Florida Health Care, but it says the plan will continue to operate as a locally managed HMO serving residents of Flagler and Volusia counties.
