A health insurer will be trying to use plan design to reward insureds who stay healthy.

Assurant Health, Milwaukee, a unit of Assurant Inc., New York, says the new One Decreasing Deductible program, available in some states with the high-deductible Individual Medical One Deductible health insurance policy, will provide a 10% deductible credit twice a year.

"Credits can accumulate year-to-year until the amount they pay of the deductible is as low as $1,500 for individual coverage or $3,000 for family coverage," Assurant Health says.

The company set the minimum limits to ensure that the policies will stay compatible with health savings accounts.

In some cases, the company says, the deductible credit program could decrease deductibles as much as 70%.
