Prudential Financial Inc. has confirmed that John Strangfeld, the chief executive officer, has officially succeeded Arthur Ryan as the company’s chairman.

The previously announced succession became official at the close of the company’s annual shareholder meeting May 13.

Strangfeld, 54, began his career at Prudential, Newark, N.J., 30 years ago. He was vice chairman when the company board appointed him as chief executive in November and announced he would ultimately take over as chairman.

Ryan had headed Prudential since 1994.
