A Lone Star State carrier is trying to improve the oral health of patients coping with medical conditions.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Richardson, Texas, a unit of Health Care Service Corp., Chicago, has set up a BlueCare Dental Connection program.

The program will identify members with conditions that can be complicated by gum disease, such as diabetes and heart disease, and encourage them to get extra dental care.

The program also will reach out to members who are pregnant.

Studies have suggested that gum disease and other oral health problems might correlate with conditions such as premature birth, heart disease and difficulty with controlling blood sugar levels.
