Personnel Changes: Scottish Re, Maple Life, Others

Scottish Re Group Ltd. has hired Samir Shah to be executive vice president and chief risk officer.

Shah previously was a principal in the enterprise risk management operation at Towers Perrin Inc., Stamford, Conn., according to Scottish Re, Hamilton, Bermuda.

Shah has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Northwestern University. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and holds the Financial Risk Manager and Professional Risk Manager professional designations.

In other personnel news:

- Maple Life Financial Inc., Bethesda, Md., has hired Kathleen Birrane to be senior vice president and general counsel.

She previously was an assistant attorney general working as principal counsel for the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Birrane has a law degree from the University of Maryland.

- WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, has hired John Cannon to be executive vice president and general counsel.

Cannon previously was deputy general counsel at CIGNA Corp., Philadelphia.

Cannon has a bachelor’s degree from Denison University and a law degree from Pennsylvania State University.

- The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc., Washington, has hired Christopher Wloszczyna to be public relations director.

Wloszczyna previously was a media spokesperson for the Investment Company Institute, Washington. He has a bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University and has worked as a personal finance reporter at USA Today.

The CFP Board also has named Timothy Stifel to be stakeholder communications director.

Stifel has been the CFP Board’s external relations manager. He has degrees in English from the University of Denver and Ohio University.

- Celent L.L.C., Boston has promoted Craig Weber to be managing director of the insurance group. Weber has been a senior analyst at Celent.
