A managed care giant has announced its employees’ philanthropic goals for 2008.

WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, says its workers have pledged to donate $15 million to 9,600 nonprofit organizations in the coming year.

A foundation affiliated with WellPoint will match 50% of the employees’ contributions, and that should raise the donation total to about $23 million, WellPoint says.

The foundation itself has started a 3-year, $30 million project to help uninsured people get insurance and it also has started a separate project to take a multigenerational approach to improving public health, WellPoint says.

This year, the main WellPoint foundation and foundations affiliated with subsidiaries are on track to give about $20 million to nonprofit organizations.
