A health insurer has come up with a method for measuring and tracking changes in the “wellness” of an employer’s employees.

Principal Financial Group Inc., Des Moines, Iowa, has paid John Lowe, director of the Prevention Research Center at the University of Iowa, to develop a Principal Wellness Score system.

The scores, which range from 0 to 100, are based on on-site health screenings and anonymized answers to questionnaires.

Employers can use the scores to gauge the wellness of employees, assess the effects of wellness on employees’ health, and analyze the possible effects of wellness programs’ on claims, Principal says.
