The group benefits arm of AmWINS Group Inc. has come up with a new strategy for covering the health of workers who now lack major medical insurance.

AmWINS, Charlotte, N.C., says its new HealthWINS program combines coverage for physician visits, prescription drugs, inpatient services and preventive care along with an option for employees, or their employers, to pay for catastrophic coverage.

The program also includes access to a patient advocacy service that can help workers negotiate better rates with hospitals, AmWINS says.

The program could be suitable for early retirees as well as for workers at retailers, restaurants and other businesses that typically lack major medical insurance, AmWINS says.

The limited benefit component of the program comes with a modest deductible and can cover a portion of the patient’s first $20,000 to $30,000 in health care expenses, AmWINS says.

AmWINS also is offering workers a chance to buy a catastrophic coverage wrap with a deductible of $50,000 to $250,000, the company says.

AmWINS will be administering the program through its office in Warwick, R.I.
