A managed care company is trying to encourage more members to consider trying equivalents to brand-name drugs.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, will be waiving co-payments for 6 months for plan members who agree to change to the generic depression drug citalopram from Lexapro, and to paroxetine from Paxil.

Aetna says it has been happy with the results from similar waive co-payment programs for drugs that control high cholesterol levels and drugs that help patients cope with allergies.
